A re-envisioning of England, its peoples, heritage, history is being conducted through an innovative use of Southhampton naval records.
SOUTHHAMPTON, ENGLAND — Unity 101 FM has begun the PortHorizon Project, which seeks to show how a range of diverse nations and peoples — from India, Jamaica, Poland, Cambodia, Somalia, Japan, Nigeria — have contributed to Britain and to Southampton in particular. The project uses Merchant Navy records held in the Southampton Archives to trace such contributions (and sacrifices during war) and help families increase the knowledge of their culture and ancestry. The project stands as a substantive example of how public-interest archival study may make clear and palpable the affiliative connections between migrations through Africa and the Caribbean and those occurring across other world continents, especially during times of war.
