Thus Far at the 2022 Australian Open

One could say the 2022 edition of the Australian Open started earlier than expected: with reports from a different sort of court, two hearing cases regarding the visa cancellation of the world number one, Novak Djokovic.

But with that matter and his withdrawal made final, the first rounds of the tennis season’s first major tournament occurred with almost no other surprises. See below for details as ensuing rounds and their matches are contested.

Men’s Singles Competition

MELBOURNE, AUSTRALIA — The men’s singles competition after a week and a half of main-draw competition has been characterized most by the surge of honed, sustained talent and competitiveness by Felix Auger-Aliassime, Taylor Fritz, Gael Monfils and Denis Shapavalov, and epic five-set displays of grit and mental toughness to meet their challenges by Matteo Berrettini, Daniil Medvedev, Rafael Nadal and Stefanos Tsitsipas.

With these well-tested four now in the semifinals — Berrettini facing Nadal, and Medvedev facing Tsitsipas — the prospect of equally compelling matches is real. Observers should expect to see contests of contrasts in style of play, shot-making and strategy, to be decided by in-match form, execution of game plan, remaining physical fitness — or all three.

Finals

Finals • FRI • 28 JAN • 2022 • 6 • Rafael Nadal (ESP) defeats • 2 • Daniil Medvedev (RUS) 2-6, (5)6-7, 6-4, 6-4, 7-5
A valiant battle from both players with court- and limb-stretching rallies and points constructed and made over several grueling hours. The Spaniard prevails by coming back from a two-set deficit to win his 21st slam tournament in the 5th.

{Match Synopsis}
Quarterfinals • WED • 26 JAN • 2022 • 4 • Stefanos Tsitsipas (GRE) defeats • 11 • Jannik Sinner (ITA) 6-3, 6-4, 6-2
Tsitsipas was in scintillating form front start to finish: pressuring his younger Italian opponent with constantly penetrating combinations of serve, groundstrokes, movement and, whenever needed, steady head and hands during the longer points. That base, and a handful of opponent-demoralising shots (line-huggers and baseline half-volley winners), allowed him to break ahead in each set and close decisively. Sinner attempted several changes in point construction and return positioning, with success, and showing good resolve all the way through. But his Greek opponent was definitely on fire.

Fourth Round (of 16)

4th Round • SUN • 23 JAN • 2022 • 6 • Rafael Nadal (ESP) defeats • DE • Adrian Mannarino (FRA) 7-6(14), 6-2, 6-2
The first set of this encounter was tense, strong quality from both players. The tiebreak had Mandarino and Nadal alternating in winning set-deciding breaks, punctuated by several long, sensational rallies that covered most of the court. In the end, the Spaniard persevered, while the body of the Frenchman (possible groin issue) made gets more difficult and decision-making wanting during the very last points. Rafa was in a celebratory mood at tiebreak’s end. And, with the tension released on both sides, the rest of the match proceeded more easily.
4th Round • SUN • 23 JAN • 2022 • 14 • Denis Shapovalov (CAN) defeats • 3 • Alexander Zverev (GER) 6-3, 7-6(5), 6-3
The Canadian came to the court with controlled aggression in mind and began accordingly. Meanwhile, the level of his German opponent was not up to par, with Zverev choosing to play passively (as he has done before) when it is his power that separates him from whoever is on the other side of the net. What we therefore witnessed was Shapovalov displaying the maturity to take full advantage, even when his higher-ranked and seeded opponent made his expected move in the second set. Problem-solving, movement, variation and an all-court game were in evidence. If Denis keeps that bit of margin and that kind of powerful, troubling depth on his shots, he will certainly contend for the win in his quarterfinal against Nadal.

Notes

1. Seed

1. Seed — is applicable when tournament officials rank a select number of players according to performance over a period (usually the prior 12 months), sometimes also factoring in a prediction of how the players may do in the draw (for example, previous performance at the tournament or on the tournament’s surface). Seed, where earned and given, is indicated by a number right before the player’s name.

2. Direct Entrant

2. Direct Entrant (‘DE’) — is applicable when an unseeded player’s world ranking is high enough to be given direct entry into the tournament. Direct entry, where earned and awarded, is indicated by ‘DE’ notation right before a player’s name.

3. Wildcard

3. Wildcard (‘WC’) — is applicable when an unseeded player’s world ranking is not high enough to be given direct entry into the tournament, and the tournament officials decide to award the player direct entry. Wildcard, where awarded, is indicated by ‘WC’ notation right before a player’s name.

4. Qualifier

4. Qualifier (‘Q’) — is applicable when an unseeded player’s world ranking is not high enough to be given direct entry into the tournament, and the player has succeeded in winning a set of matches to qualify for entry into the tournament’s first round. Qualification, where earned, is indicated by ‘Q’ notation right before a player’s name.

5. Lucky Loser

5. Lucky Loser (‘LL’) — is applicable when an unseeded player’s world ranking is not high enough to be given direct entry into the tournament, and the player has almost succeeded in winning a set of matches to qualify for entry into the tournament’s first round, having lost the very last match to a successful qualifier, and so been designated instead to wait to see if, for some reason, a spot in the first round opens up, where upon they are entered into the tournament. Lucky loser entry, where earned and opportuned, is indicated by ‘LL’ notation right before a player’s name.

Women’s Singles Competition

MELBOURNE, AUSTRALIA —The women’s singles competition after a week and a half of main-draw competition has been characterized most by the resurgence of form for two American players, Danielle Collins and Madison Keys, as they return to the semifinals.

There, in their respective semis, each of the hard-hitting Americans meet slam champions known for their movement, variation and forehands. Ashleigh Barty, the home-country favorite and current #1 faces Keys. While Collins faces another French Open champ in the hard-court sliding Pole, Iga Swiatek. The matchups are indeed promising.

Finals

Finals • SAT • 29 JAN • 2022 • 1 • Ashleigh Barty (AUS) defeats • 27 • Danielle Collins (USA) 6-3, 7-6(2)
The final was largely won by an ability on the part of Barty to execute two versions of her A game. The first was in evidence during the first set, where Barty’s mix of spun forehands and deep backhands slices was enough to secure a break at 4-3 and serve to end opening set matters at 6-3. Then Collins adapted: handling the deep and mid-court slice backhands with skill and conviction, aiming for and hitting corners (not lines), even during extended rallies, and using her own movement to apply persistently controlled aggression that overcame her Australian opponent’s speed and nifty defense. The result was a 5-1 lead in the second set, which entailed two breaks of Barty’s serve, all the more remarkable because the Australian had held serve all but once in the prior six matches of the tournament and had come to Melbourne with similar months-long service holding streak. Barty’s response was to flatten out her forehand, on returns and during longer points, and to vary the depth, aggression and intent of her slice backhand, not just to elicit or force errors but to run around and hit that now flatter and higher-paced forehand. The comeback was done calmly, methodically, point by point, and with her home crowd cheering vociferously all through and after championship point.

Fourth Round (of 16)

4th Round • SUN • 23 JAN • 2022 • DE • Madison Keys (USA) defeats • 8 • Paula Badosa (ESP) 6-3, 6-1
The American was dominant and dictating from the first two games of the match, hitting with judicious control of her natural power off the serve, return and both wings of her groundstrokes, often feeding off any pace her Spanish opponent provided. Badosa did try to alter the trajectory and pace of her shots in the second set, beginning to hit deep and elicit a few errors. But the Spaniard’s serve kept letting her down and a calm, on-form Keys knew how to capitalize and run away with the match. A well-earned spot in the quarterfinals.
4th Round • SUN • 23 JAN • 2022 • 4 • Barbora Krejcikova (CZE) defeats • 24 • Victoria Azarenka (BLR) 6-2, 6-2
As a two-time winer of this slam, Azarenka began with an intensity on the serve and return that indicated the manner in which she did win on this court several times. But being broken while serving into the serve complicated matters in the middle of the first set. And in her Czech opponent, we saw a brilliant example of controlled aggression: displaying astute variations of power and placement on her serve and groundstrokes to continuous potent effect. The disguise on every one of her finishing shots, allowed Krejcikova to find space left repeatedly open by a wrong-footed Vika. The Belarusian did have to be treated for neck discomfort in the second set. But the greater trouble was coming from the racquet being wielded on the other side. Krejcikova next faces Keys in the quarterfinals.

Second Round (of 64)

2nd Round • WED • 19 JAN • 2022 • 1 • Ashleigh Barty (AUS) defeats • Q • Lucia Bronzetti (ITA) 6-1, 6-1
The Australian #1 has arrived in Melbourne with her game on song. Her balance of aggression, finesse, movement, serve and net play is quite often making her unplayable. Three games lost thus far.
2nd Round • WED • 19 JAN • 2022 • 30 • Camila Giorgi (ITA) defeats • DE • Tereza Martincova (CZE) 6-2, 7-6(2)
The shotmaking Italian is reigning in her shots just enough to pull out tight sets, which makes her a dangerous opponent in majors. The No. 1 seed, Barty, is next.
2nd Round • WED • 19 JAN • 2022 • 15 • Elina Svitolina (UKR) defeats • DE • Harmony Tan (FRA) 6-3, 5-7, 5-1 (retired)
After winning the second set, Tan found herself in injury trouble and retired in grimacing pain with only three points left to end it.
2nd Round • WED • 19 JAN • 2022 • 24 • Victoria Azarenka (BEL) defeats • DE • Jil Teichmann (SUI) 6-1, 6-2
As always, very heartening to see the former champion here have such clean early matches. A second week showing might just be on her racquet. Svitolina makes for a strong, tough third round.

{MATCH SYNOPSIS}
2nd Round • WED • 19 JAN • 2022 • DE • Nuria Parrizas Diaz (ESP) defeats • DE • Maryna Zanevska (BEL) Walkover
{MATCH SYNOPSIS}
2nd Round • WED • 19 JAN • 2022 • DE • Amanda Anisimova (USA) defeats • 22 • Belinda Bencic (SUI) 6-2, 7-5
The diminutive but tough and court-smart Russian-American upset the seeded and smooth-stroking Swiss by being more successful at controlled aggression. Anisimova had more aces than Bencic (7 to 2), fewer double-faults (4 to 5), and significantly better win rate on her first serve (74% to 58%) and second serve (50% to 38%). Combine the service numbers with the return numbers — return winners (5 to 1), return unforced errors (6 to 3), number of opportunities to return (76 to 51), return points won (42% to 25%) — and the result is a statistical complement to the effect on court of Anisimova’s brand of pressure. More spin on her shots and faster, more alert movement allows her to both tough out defensive situations and end points with less worry about clipping the net or going astray of the lines. Hence, too, the difference in overall winners for the match (28 to 10) with little difference in total of unforced errors (24 to 23). Next for Anisimova is the defending champion Osaka.

Notes

1. Seed

First Post-Matches

“It’s exciting to be able to celebrate my culture, of indigenous culture, of so many facets of our family and our heritage.”

— Ashleigh Barty in her post-match press conference after her straight set win in the first round of the 2022 Australian Open, on being asked about upcoming First Nations Day.

“Well, to be honest, not much went according to plan today, except that I won!”

— Alexander Zverev in his post-match on-court interview after his first round win at the 2022 Australian Open.

Conclusions

This year‘s edition of the Australian Open begins — despite the withdrawal of a top seed in Djokovic, due to visa cancellation — with a round of matches that hold to form. Those liking their major slams to be low on early upsets and surprises should be satisfied thus far.

II.

Questions

Which of the men will take most advantage of the absence of Novak this year? Will the strong and efficient play of the top female seeds continue on through the second week?

III.

Suggestions

Of course, most tennis and sports fans are hoping all major tournaments — and their hosting countries — are able to coordinate and sort out their visa requiremnts, questions and final approvals well in advance of play and much more successfully.
